The growth of Irish Nationalism

HIS13IRE010 preview. The growth of Irish Nationalism: An analysis of the resurgent growth of Irish nationalism with the arrival of Isaac Butt and Charles Stuart Parnell on the political scene

This lesson follows on from Y13IREL09 (Gladstone’s First Reforms) and continues to look at the resurgent growth of Irish nationalism with the arrival of Isaac Butt and Charles Stuart Parnell on the political scene. What direction does the Irish question take in the latter half of the nineteenth century and which Westminster political party will deal more effectively with Irish demands? The following lessons will look more closely at the development of the Home Rule movement and assess the extent to which Irish demands accelerate faster than British policy.

NOTE: This plan requires additional resources which are listed below

  • Great Britain and the Irish question 1800-1922 (Second Edition) by Paul Adelman and Robert Pearce (Hodder & Stoughton)
  • DVD: "Her Majesty Mrs. Brown" starring Judi Dench and Billy Connolly (optional but strangly recommended)
