This lesson continues looking at Ireland in the 1830s and 1840s. It concentrates on O’Connell’s relationship with the Whigs/Tories and focuses on his campaign to repeal the Act of Union. Students will gain an understanding of the relationship between O’Connell and the Whigs after Catholic Emancipation had been achieved. What was the nature and impact of Whig Irish reform? What were O’Connell’s motives in soliciting such a relationship? What was the relationship between the British and the Irish under the Peel leadership?
